Subdomains
Subdomain hosting at SWC is only available for sites I personally like or am interested in. Though it's free, the general Terms of Hosting also applies to subdomain hostees.
Domains
At the moment, subdomains can be hosted under the following domains: snow-willow.com or wildx.org.
cPanel
cPanel is optional to all subdomain accounts and the features are listed on the information page. However, once you choose to have a cPanel-enabled subdomain, you cannot go back to choosing an account without. So what happens if you have a cPanel subdomain?
- cPanel takes up about 1 MB of space.
- You can only access the site from http://subdomain.domain.com/ and not http://domain.com/subdomain/, as opposed to normal accounts, which allow both ways.
- There will be a lot of folders in your account which may confuse you once you log in through your FTP instead of just having your main folder and /cgi-bin.
Disk Quota and Bandwidth
You are allowed to request whatever amount of disk quota and monthly bandwidth you'd like to have for your account. Your estimated usage should be a bit more than what you need just in case you may expand your site in the future.
For those of you that do not know what the term "bandwidth" means, it is basically the average file size of all your web pages multiplied by the number of page views for your site per month plus a little bit more for your uploads. If you still don't understand, pause here, go look it up on the Internet—it's a great resource.
Ready to order? Read some personal comments:
I am not serving to host all newbie website owners who wish to move out from ad-filled free-hosts, nor am I providing space for you to learn and play things out. Scanning through the features provided even for subdomain accounts, you might think "Wow! This is great! And it's free!" and decide to apply, already forgetting about my first statement on this page. So I'll reinforce it again: I am looking for sites that attract me personally.
The most basic qualities you should have are: good design skills, good coding skills, good writing skills and good manners. Should you respect your host? The answer is "Yes". For example, upload your content as soon as you can in reasonable time and if you don't want the account anymore, contact me when you've made such a decision. If you believe you have all that, it's time for you to convince me in the few little fields ahead.
